MUSIC MINISTRY ALIVE! / THE YOUNG CHURCH

Mentoring young people has always held a special place in David’s heart. This mentoring has taken on many forms, through his work with youth choirs and youth retreats; and in campus ministry work, reaching its peak influence when he began  Music Ministry Alive!an international liturgical music formation effort for high school and college age youth.  Inaugurated in 1999, the unique vision and pedagogy of MMA “graduated” well over 2000 young people during its 19 year history, that reached young teenagers and early college age youth representing 47 States, Washington DC, Canada, Australia, Ireland, England, Germany, Kenya, Peru and the Philippines; empowering the young church in sung prayer leadership for the church.  Together with Lori True who served as its associate director, David has engaged some of the most well-known and respected names in liturgy, music and ministry to serve as teachers, mentors and guides for this important cause.

David also served part-time at Benilde-St. Margaret’s School https://www.bsmschool.org in St. Louis Park, Minnesota from 1997-2011, as campus minister and teacher in both the theology and music departments.  In the fall of 2011, David became part of the campus ministry team at Cretin-Derham Hall High School https://www.cretin-derhamhall.org in St. Paul for 4 years, where he also directed their campus liturgical choir, and began the Cretin Derham-Hall Taize’ Prayer community that continued through 2019.

Many who have been a part of MMA and been among David’s many “students” over the years have gone on to serve in music and youth ministry in parishes and schools; others have become published composers; and all continue to in varied ways, respond to God’s call to serve. While the MMA summer institute held its final program in the summer of 2017, David and Lori continue to give attention to the development and expansion of the mission of MMA. David believes that MMA has been the best most important contribution (more so than his liturgical compositions) that he has offered to the praying Church.
